My main computer, a large desktop tower, gave up the ghost today. It was an 11-year-old machine running Windows XP. It was a nice, powerful machine when purchased. Over the years I had to make some repairs; replace the RAM, replace the hard drive.

In the last year it had started to get cranky. Had to replace the RAM again. Had to replace the soundcard. In the last two months it had gotten really cranky, slow and error prone. Today while in the middle of some graphics work, it went down and would not reboot. The boot sector of the hard drive was corrupt or damaged. Most of my important stuff had been backed up. However that was one of the other bugs that had popped up. In the last few months the back-up program would not operate, so there were some new files that had not been backed up.

So I spent the entire day trying to work with the thing. It came down to getting a new hard drive and trying to rebuild the old thing, or finding a way to get some data off the old hard drive and start doing my work on my laptop. Considering the age and the operating system, it did not make much sense trying to get the thing up and running again. It was only going to get cranky again, and probably sometime soon.

After a little trickery, I was able to get the hard drive to run. Not boot up, but run. I managed to get the computer into Command Prompt mode and do manual copies of unbacked up files to an external drive. Yippee!

So now I am working on my laptop, though I have it set up like a desktop with it connected to a large monitor, my ergonomic keyboard and scratch pad, printer, and other devices. It will take me some time to get it all working the way I am accustomed but it should work well for a good, long while.

So finally, after many hours of computer labor, I can finally get back to blogging. :D
