WhewAfter several months, the On a Sphere’s Edge audio book production work is finally done!

All files were uploaded to ACX late last night – well, early this morning would be more technically correct. ACX has a required review period, calling it a quality check, though I am sure it is as much a content check as anything else. I feel good about the audio quality, and great about the content. So, in 10 to 14 days the audio book should be available.

6 hours, 48 minutes and 47 seconds of narration is a tough task, especially with much of it being character acting. Add to that numerous sound effects, background music and complex audio mixes, all of which made the work fairly grueling. Reading and editing was difficult enough in itself. But I wanted to create an enjoyable, entertaining experience, and I believe I have done that.

As for those extras. . . Yes, there is music. I purchased 1 piece from a royalty free stock shop, all others I created myself using a music generator. I went to some lengths to create themes and motifs, using particular instruments, sound signatures, and riffs to allude to specific characters, reprising those motifs where necessary.

And yes, there are sound effects. A great deal of them. They are subtle and few in the first few chapters, but gradually increase in number and frequency as the story progresses, at times creating entire environments. I wanted to ease the listener in.

Work on the audio book led to some minor changes in the original book. Some were error / type-o fixes. Some were artistic considerations. These changes, if all collected together, would amount to less than half a page, so nothing has really changed though readability may have been improved. I suppose I could continue to edit and rewrite forever. I guess any author could. But at some point you have to put the work to bed and move on to other things – like the regular cleaning of the house that was allowed to slide.

So, wait for it… Soon you will be able to sit back and listen to this story about addiction, attraction, myth, and mystery in a lighthearted future. As they say, Coming Soon.
