The Target

The TargetWith eyes fixed on a specific target, the world fades away. Peripheral vision fails. Reason loses touch with reality. Only the target matters. One’s own failings go unobserved. Nothing matters but the target.

Honor goes out the window. Respect evaporates. These are the spirits and wisps of the fringe that surround the goal. These lofty, nobler aspects of being lose their relevance. Only the goal matters.

Locked in on that single specific, logic escapes. The specific becomes abstract, extracted and redacted from reality. Forget the world. Forget the others. Forget the multitude of relationships that touch the specific. Only the objective matters.

In truth, all things matter. The target is an elusive dream, flitting from zone to zone, tugged and pulled by the greater reality that surrounds it. You have clouded your vision with blurry-eyed concentration on a single point.

Blink. Step back. Look at the whole picture. Take a grander view. The related items will become clearer. Those nobler aspects will reveal their importance. Your specific target will become larger. The flitting will settle into a rhythmic dance. You will understand the patterns and be able to predict positions.

However, that seems too simple. It reveals your own failings. To do so would be to respond to reason, and honor the respect of the myriad tangents.

Go ahead then. Squint. Block out everything else. Allow only the target to consume you. It will flit away. You will be without respect, and receive none. You will be devoid of honor, and thus have none. You will be without logic, focused on nothingness.
